The Significance of Chapter 34 in Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice Pride And Prejudice is a 19th Century romantic novel written by Jane Austen in 1813, it presents a true representation of societys expectations towards marriage and love at the time. It focuses on two central characters Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy and their love-hate relationship. Elizabeth the second eldest daughter of five sisters is an intelligent woman with a lively disposition, strong-minded determination and a woman who religiously sticks to her principles. This proves to be quite a problem for Lady Catherine de Bourgh since he is betrothed to her daughter but refuses to marry her; he is willing to go against societys expectations. Mr Darcy has extremely high standards, is very picky and only chooses to be acquainted with someone who he finds is sufficiently accomplished, beautiful and intelligent, this is why it comes as such a huge shock to everyone and mostly himself when he finds himself proposing to Elizabeth after first declaring, She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me. When prompted to ask her to dance. Elizabeth equally dislikes him, I think him very disagreeable. and this is fuelled by the tall tales Mr Wickham spins off his womanising tongue. Mr Wickham and Mr Darcy are mortal enemies and share a very uncomfortable past and Mr Wickham is only too happy to speak ill of his once childhood friend. (b) The Professional Conduct Committee, Disciplinary Tribunal and Appeals Tribunal/Council are responsible for monitoring the professional conduct of the members so as to maintain the authority of the Institute. The Institute is a body of importance and everyone coming under the Institute is to be treated equally be it students, members or directors so as to maintain the equality and trust of people in it (Saltelli, Chan and Scott, 2008). Members must comply with the standards applicable, including professional technical standards and Code of Ethics. As a jurisdiction body, the focus of the complaints is only to investigate a member's professional conduct. The results are important in a sense it relates to a member's position and standing in the institution. However, such disciplinary bodies do not have the power of Court and therefore, cannot overturn or interfere in any court decisions. Such bodies are expected to work within the rules of natural justice or procedural fairness so as to ensure that fairness is followed throughout the Institute (Taylor, 2008). Professional bodies are characterized by their acceptance of responsibility towards public. These 'public' consists of governments, employees, employers, investors, credit grantors, clients business financial communities who trust on the integrity and objectivity of such professional bodies to maintain smooth functioning of Commerce. Such reliance poses a public interest responsibility on these bodies. These professional bodies plays an important role in society and the public relies heavily for sound financial decisions, accounting, reporting effective communication management of business and other matters. The Institute's attitude determines the impact of it on the economic well being of their both country as well as their community. Such professional bodies voluntarily publish the complaints their decisions and investigation as by providing such unique services, they can establish the fact that public confidence is firmly founded. It is the core part of the professional bodies to make known to its users that the performance is being executed at the highest level and the ethical requirements are being fulfilled to ensure such performance. These professional bodies consider the user expectations of the ethical standards of their professionalism and should take their opinions in account too (Clarke and Clarke, 1990). They publish their decisions for the sake of considering any 'expectation gap' between the standards expected and those levied and therefore, such grievances too can be addressed or dealt with. Stakeholders are those persons who are directly or indirectly affected by the actions of the organization regarding policies, rules and regulations. Stakeholders are considered to be those sources through which the business draws its resources. They can be both internal as well as external. Some key stakeholders are creditors, debtors, employees, employers, government, investors, customers and public in general. Therefore, a company has some responsibility towards its stakeholders (Fairhurst, 2015). The company's main responsibility lies in the preparation presentation of financial statements such as Income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement, etc. Though these financial statements record the past events, it is frequently referred by the stakeholders for the sake of making decisions. Considering the financial statements, let us discuss them in brief: Income Statement Balance sheet: This statement reflects the financial performance and position of the company and shows a growth in both revenue net income in case of income statement and changes in the major elements of balance sheet such as loan amount, assets, inventories, etc. Net income reflects the fact that how successfully a business has made use of all of its resources and made profits during that particular accounting period. Also, a part of this income statement reflects the amount spent by the business for carrying out its operations. A company is required to prepare a statement with previous year's data so as to reflect the major changes in the elements. For example, a rise in administrative expenses but with no change in sales revenue shows an unusual expenditure and therefore, the management is to look into this matter (Galbraith, Downey and Kates, 2002). Cash Flow Statement: Cash flow statement is the true indicator of cash in hand and reflects the cash inflows and outflows. It reflects the actual money paid or actual money received and therefore, serves as a source of capability of the company to pay its short term obligations instantly, if required. The changes in these statements can be both positive negative. For example, increase in sales with cost reduction reflects the fully utilized efficiency of the business operations. These financial statements are referred for different purposes. Some of the examples are: The operating results of the company such ad sales, stock turnover ratio, etc serves as a source of reliability to creditors who can then be comfortable with the credit terms provided by them as the probability of receiving their amount after a period of time becomes confirmed (TULSIAN, 2016). The balance sheet serves as a source of information to both investors bank lenders. Such information reflects the credibility background of the company and on the basis of that, the investors decide whether it would be profitable to make an investment in the company or not. After all, it's their money that would be used in business operations. In a similar way, bank would refer such information before granting any loan to the organization as it is important to determine whether the company is capable of generating enough income or not as well as whether the operations of the business are for the well being of the community as a whole. The financial statements serve as a source of satisfaction to employees employers both as they are the key role models behind the success of an organization. An idea becomes a reality only if it had been implemented in the best possible manner and these employees employers are the key implementers of such plans (Galbraith, Downey and Kates, 2002). According to Institute of Management Accountants, 'management accounting is a profession that involves partnering in management decision making, devising planning and performance management systems, and providing expertise in financial reporting and control to assist management in the formulation and implementation of an organization's strategy'. As per the given case, the plant manager seems to be really proud of his position as he made a statement that he doesn't want any bean counter to poke his nose in his daily operations as he is well acquainted with his responsibilities (Holland and Torregrosa, 2008). However, a bean counter is that accountant who is responsible for keeping an eye on the expenditures so as to control unnecessary expenses and work according to the set budget. Being the new management accountant, it becomes my duty to make the plant manager realize that his role isn't an independent role and it does depends on the management accountant's role as he plays a key role for setting up the budgets and make estimates about the business expenses as going by the definition, it is the management accountant who is not only responsible for planning performance of the entity, but also involves reporting on such operations carried out and whether the strategies formulated have been implemented in the best possible ma nner or not. These self-reports goes not only to the management but also to the shareholders, the actual savior of the company as it is their money which is being used for carrying out such operations and to the tax authorities, that would take an entity into legal obligations, if such reports are found not true and fair (Khan and Jain, 2014). Thus, the management accountants are the actual corporate accountants whose role is to perform a series of related tasks apart from accounting work so as to assure a company's financial security and handling all such related matters and to formulate implement the management's strategy. They are the key role models for determining the status success of a company. Their work includes cost accounting, management issues and financial matters, preparation of budgets, handling tax related matters, management of assets, determination of compensation and other beneficial packages, strategic planning implementation (Reilly and Brown, 2012). It is to be stated here that no individual in an organization can play an independent role. The different levels of management, though well distinct from each other, are dependent upon each other as top management decisions would be useless if there is no middle level or lower management to execute it. Similarly, the lower management wouldn't be able to work if there would be no middle level management to guide them and provide them a direction towards goals. Also, communication gap would widen up if there would be no middle level management in between. Thus, the plant manager would have to depend on the management accountants even for the approval of the expenditures to be made as one wrong step by the plant manager could drag the entire organization into heavy losses including loss of revenue, increased expenditures, increased wastage, etc. It is a challenging task for the management accountants to represent their information in the most represent able manner so as to provide qualitative information. However, it now becomes questionable that how the performance measures and information that reflects the quality is being completely disclosed through general ledger system that is limited to debits and credits of amounts solely. For the past years, management accountants have been able to produce the qualitative information through general ledger system of financial accounting. However, with emergence of new systems such as JIT, Increased competition in the market, has enumerated the issues on the quality timeliness making the general ledger system difficult to use. Therefore, the organizations have to mandatorily switch to computerized information technology to track represent any kind of information. Now, it becomes a real challenge to the current as well as the future management accountants to organize the large amoun t of data so as to support decision making without creating an overload of information. Thus, it gets included in the definition of management accountant and therefore, they are required to understand the use Importance of current technology (Palepu, Healy and Peek, 2016). Therefore, a management accountant has to develop the skills knowledge in computerized technology which may even require them to take additional courses of study for the future business of the organization. The goal of adoption of such technology would be providing of framework of cost, quality timeliness information that supports the managerial processes and to support add competitive value to the organization. Following is the table for all the relevant ratios: RATIO ANALYSIS OF MobileNet : PARTICULARS AMOUNT ($) CURRENT RATIO CURRENT ASSETS 20000 CURRENT LIABILITIES 9000 CURERENT RATIO (CURRENT ASSETS/CURRENT LIABILITIES) 2.22 RETURN ON ASSETS NET EARNINGS 7000 TOTRAL ASSETS 72000 RETURN ON ASSETS (NET EARNINGS/TOTAL ASSETS) 9.72% RETURN ON SHAREHOLDER'S FUNDS NET EARNINGS 7000 OWNER'S EQUITY 47000 RETURN ON SHAREHOLDER'S FUNDS= NET EARNINGS/OWNER'S EQUITY 14.89% DEBT-EQUITY RATIO LONG TERM LIABILITIES 16000 OWNER'S EQUITY 47000 DEBT-EQUITY RATIO (LONG TERM DEBTS/OWNER'S EQUITY) 0.34 Referring to the ratios calculated, Evaluation of company's financial status: Current Ratio: Current ratio is a liquidity ratio that shows a company's ability to pay its short term obligations instantly if required. It is calculated by dividing current assets by current liabilities as current assets are those assets that can be converted into cash readily and current liabilities includes short term provisions creditors for goods expenses. In the current case, the current ratio is 2.22 that show the current assets are double of current liabilities which is a good indicator. However, the current ratio is not a true indicator as the current assets includes non cash items which cannot be converted into cash at all and inventories, which may not be able to be converted into cash readily. Return on Assets: The percentage return on assets is an indicator of efficiency of the business operations as it shows how efficiently the management is using its assets to generate the net income. However in the present case, the % return on assets is 9.72% which is not a good sign as the company that owns assets worth $72000 is generating an income of just $7000. The company is may be lagging behind in the proper utilization of its assets as the income in comparison to its assets is quite low. Return on Equity: The investors are the key members of any organization as the money used to carry out business operations are their investments. Thus, it is important for the investors to know the income generated by the company so as to determine their possible return from the company as equity shareholders receive their return only when the company generates enough sufficient income. Thus, the return on equity percentage is a reflection of such concern as it is important to know that whether the investments made into the company are being used for the well being or not. In the current case, the % return on equity is 14.89% which is again not a good indicator signifying towards either no use or wrong use of investor's money. Debt to equity ratio : The debt to equity ratio is the calculation of how much times the debt is of equity and whether the company owns enough equity to pay back to their debt holders if in case required. The debts are an obligation over the company while the equity fund is considered to be own capital. Thus, this ratio analyzes the whether the company is supported by enough investments to handle the burden of debts over it. In the current case, the debt to equity ratio is 0.34 indicating towards the goodness of the company. As the financial statements are considered risky is debts exceeds equity funds. Thus, 0.34 indicates that the company owns investments way more than the burden of debts over the company. References: Berman, K., Knight, J. and Case, J. The Color Purple Real Outcome Of Economic Achievement And Essays

The Color Purple: Real Outcome of Economic Achievement and Alternative Economic View The main theme this essay will be focusing on is the distinction between the "real" outcome of economic achievement as described in The Color Purple by the lynching of Celie's father, and its "alternative" economic view presented at the end of the novel depicting Celie's happiness and entrepreneurial success. We will attempt the task at hand by relating the novel to two Models (Historical and Empirical Data, Manners and Customs) of representation in the "real" and "alternative" worlds of The Color Purple. By focusing on the letters describing the lynching of Celie's father, and the letter describing Celie's economic stability and happiness (found in last letter), we will have established a clear distinction between the real and alternative worlds in relation to the economic situations presented throughout the novel. Manners and customs in the "real" generally work to maintain order, decorum, and stability. Within the novel the reality was that blacks had to work for whites on whatever terms were available. When using manners and customs to depict the real world of the novel, it is evident we are examining an external world based in a society where the white oppressor governs the oppressed black populace. The economic realities of white land ownership, near-monopoly of technical and business skills and control of financial institutions was in fact the accepted norm (Sowell 48). When presenting the term fact - we must account for the introduction of a second model, "historical and empirical data" in representing the real world of The Color Purple. As illustrated in the pages of American history books, it is evident that American Negro slavery had a peculiar combination of features. The key features of American slavery were that it followed racial or color lines and that it was slavery in a democratic country (Sowell 4). The fact that it existed in a democratic country meant that it required some extraordinary rationale to reconcile it with the prevailing values of the nation. Racism was an obvious response, whose effects were still felt more than a century after its abolition (Sowell 3). The Models (Manners and Customs, Historical and Empirical Data) of representation in the real world of The Color Purple was made clear when we discover that Celie's biological father was lynched for being a prosperous storekeeper. "And as he (the father) did so well farming and everything he turned his hand to prospered, he decided to open a store, and try his luck selling dry goods as well. Well, his store did so well that he talked his two brothers into helping him run it. . . . Then the white merchants began to get together and complain that his store was taking all the black business away from them. . . . This would not do"(Walker 180). The store the black men owned took the business away from the white men, who then interfered with the free market (really the white market) by lynching their black competitors. Class relations, in this instance, are shown to motivate lynching. Lynching was the act of violence white men performed to invoke the context of black inferiority and sub-humanity to the victim, exposing the reality of the economic bases of racial oppression (Berlant 217). The black individual served as a figure of racial "justice" for whites; the black individual was an economic appendage reduced to the embodiment of his or her alienation (Berlant 224). "Color" in the southern U.S. during the early 1900s was synonymous with inferiority. When discussing the economic alternative world illustrated in The Color Purple Celie situates herself firmly in the family's entrepreneurial tradition; she runs her business successfully. Where her father and uncles were lynched for presuming the rights of full American citizens, Celie is ironically rewarded for following in her family's entrepreneurial interests. Celie's shift from underclass victim to capitalist entrepreneur has only positive signification. Her progression from exploited black woman, as woman, as sexual victim, is aided by her entrance into the economy as property owner, manager of a small business, storekeeper - in short capitalist entrepreneur. The Models (Manners and Customs, Historical and Empirical Data) of representation in the alternative world presented at the end of the novel, leave us with the notion of a happy ending for our heroine Celie. Here Historical and Empirical Data has completely been suspended or erased form existence. There is no reminiscing on evidence of any social mistreatment or racial abuse. Also the Manners and Customs have been reversed, emphasizing that it is completely natural/normal for a black woman to be running a successful business in the deep American South (which in the real is unheard of,

Plato Vs. Aristotle Essays - Ontology, Ancient Greek Philosophers

Plato Vs. Aristotle Essays - Ontology, Ancient Greek Philosophers Plato Vs. Aristotle Aristotle refutes Plato's Theory of Ideas on three basic grounds: that the existence of Ideas contradicts itself by denying the possibility of negations; that his illustrations of Ideas are merely empty metaphors; and that they theory uses impermanent abstractions to create examples of perception. Though the theory is meant to establish concrete standards for the knowledge of reality, Aristotle considers it fraught with inconsistencies and believes that the concept of reality depends upon all forms' correlations to other elements. Ideas, Plato believes, are permanent, self-contained absolutes, which answered to each item of exact knowledge attained through human thought. Also, Ideas are in Plato's view concrete standards by which all human endeavor can be judged, for the hierarchy of all ideas leads to the highest absolute - that of Good. In addition, the theory claims that states of being are contingent upon the mingling of various Forms of existence, that knowledge is objective and thus clearly more real, and that only the processes of nature were valid entities. However, Aristotle attacks this theory on the grounds that Plato's arguments are inconclusive either his assertions are not al all cogent. Aristotle says, or his arguments lead to contradictory conclusions. For example, Aristotle claims that Plato's arguments lead one to conclude that entities (such as anything man-made) and negations of concrete ideas could exist - such as non-good in opposition to good. This contradicts Plato's own belief that only natural objects could serve as standards of knowledge. Also, Aristotle refutes Plato's belief that Ideas are perfect entities unto themselves, independent of subjective human experience. Ideas, Aristotle claims, are not abstractions on a proverbial pedestal but mere duplicates of things witnessed in ordinary daily life. The Ideas of things, he says, are not inherent to the objects in particular but created separately and placed apart from the objects the mselves. Thus, Aristotle says, Plato's idea that Ideas are perfect entities, intangible to subjective human experience, is meaningless, for all standards are based somewhere in ordinary human activity and perception. Thirdly, Aristotle assails Plato's efforts to find something common to several similar objects at once, a perfect exemplar of the quality those things share. Beauty is a perfect example; Plato considered Beauty both a notion and an ideal, isolated by abstractions and fixed permanently while its representatives fade away. Aristotle claims that abstractions like Beauty cannot be cast as absolutes, independent of temporal human experience; the Idea of Beauty changes with time and individual perceptions and cannot (as Plato felt) exist forever as a concrete standard. Plato and Aristotle reach some agreement, though, on the topic of reality. Plato believes that all reality was derived from his Ideas (which themselves dealt with concrete hierarchy of rational ideas. St. Ansel m, though, makes the most dogmatic and logically tortuous case for God's existence, relying not upon explanations of goodness, truth, or rational order of ideas but upon an absurd argument. He claims that everyone has some sense of God, and he claims that for one to deny God's existence is an invalid and contradictory assertion; therefore, God exists. Also, Anselm believes that those capable of understanding God cannot believe that he does not exist - as if the enormity of the idea was so clear than only a fool could not perceive it. His arguments seem the weakest of the four viewpoints here, for they are riddled with dogma and assume that God is a constant - using faith alone. Anselm considers faith paramount to logic or other forms of thought and asks no questions as to what powers the universe or what goodness is - he basically follows the Christian party line too closely to be valid. In general, St. Augustine combines Plato's idea of a moral hierarchy with his own rational obser vations of truth and goodness being embodied in their highest form by God. While Plato wavers on God's superiority, Aristotle views man as god's pawn, and Anselm uses tortuous dogmatic logic, Augustine's arguments seem to make the most sense from not only a Christian point of view but from a moral and rational one as well. The philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, St. Augustine, and St. Anselm on the existence of God all vary on

8 Most Important Updates for You to Know on LinkedIn – March 2016 It’s hard to believe 6 months have passed since my last  What’s New on LinkedIn update in October 2015. There are a bunch of updates I want you to know about. They may have passed across your inbox, and you might have taken note, or you might not have paid attention. This summary should be all you need to make sure you’re on top of the current features on LinkedIn! Managing your settings – coming soon The â€Å"Privacy Settings† menu is soon going to be easier to navigate. All settings will be categorized into three groups: Account, Privacy and Communications. It will look something like this: Connection suggestions – coming soon LinkedIn will be suggesting more connections to you based on who has you in the contacts they’ve uploaded to LinkedIn. You will also have more control over who sees you as a suggested connection. Here’s what one of those suggestions will look like: Reminder: You can send customized messages via mobile! I mentioned this in my October update and it’s worth addressing again. Be careful when you send invitations via your mobile device. Do NOT click on â€Å"Connect† – you need to find the â€Å"Menu† or â€Å"More† button on an Android or the â€Å"†¦Ã¢â‚¬ on an iPhone. Here’s what that looks like on an iPhone: Next you’ll get a â€Å"Customize invite† option: Click on â€Å"Customize invite† and write your message. Your connections will appreciate you for treating them like human beings not robots. More mobile application changes LinkedIn rolled out a new and improved mobile app in December. You should now be having a better experience with its new 5 core areas, Your Feed (Home), Me, My Network, Messaging, and Search. For more info see Our New LinkedIn App is Here! Making it Easier than Ever to Stay In Touch with the People and Information you Need to be Successful. Insights on LinkedIn job postings LinkedIn has made it easier to find background information about jobs that interest you. Enjoy discovering †¦ What connections you have at a company: Who will work with you if you get the job: Hiring trends at the company (for premium subscribers): This data puts you as a job seeker in a powerful position to understand your viability as a potential employee and to connect with the right people at the organization. Snagajob LinkedIn is providing more resources for hourly jobseekers through Snagajob. One significant implication of this partnership is that having a LinkedIn profile will become important for a wider audience. Snagajob subscribers will also get a 1-month free subscription to Lynda.com where they can take courses to acquire important skills for their profession. Inbox Messaging Honestly, LinkedIn’s Updated Messaging Features have been driving me and many people I know up a wall. Old messages are vanishing like hotcakes. I’m hoping LinkedIn will fix this soon! Introductions In October I highlighted problems with the Request an introduction feature on LinkedIn. I’m happy to report that it is now working properly! If you want to be introduced to a second degree connection, go to your mutual connection’s profile page and look on the right hand side for the â€Å"How You’re Connected† section. Click on â€Å"Get introduced† to be taken to a pre-populated messaging template that can be customized as needed. Enjoy expanding your network with this now functional feature! OK savvy LinkedIn users, have fun with all these changes. As soon as you get used to this bunch, there will be more. And if you have questions about any of these changes or others you are noticing, let me know and I’ll do my best to address them in future blogs and e-book editions!

Family Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Family Law - Essay Example are treated slightly better than unmarried fathers when it comes to issues regarding the children, however when relationships break up it is generally the father that loses contact with the child or is restricted in the amount of contact they can have. Infrequently fathers are given preference over mothers in residence orders6. In general terms the courts have to have substantial proof that the mother is incapable of looking after the child before an order is made for the father to have care and control of the child. In the UK fathers can acquire parental responsibility either by being married to the mother of the child at the time that the baby is born or by the registering of the child jointly with the mother. Married fathers are entitled to register the birth of the baby without the mother being present and will be automatically entered onto the birth certificate of the child even if they are not present when the child is registered. Unmarried fathers will only appear on the birth certificate if the mother of the baby agrees to the father’s name been entered on the birth certificate. Since the introduction of the Adoption and Children Act 2002 an unmarried father can have parental responsibility if his name appears on the register of births. The effect of the 2002 Act led to the Children Act 1989 being amended so that there is no longer a requirement that the father has to prove his genetic fatherhood in order to be entered on the birth register. The acquisition of parental responsibility entitles the father to the right of consultation with regard to any decisions that are to be taken in respect of the welfare of the child7. In cases were the mother is incapable of caring for the child a father with parental responsibility can apply to the courts for a residence order whereby the court can insist on the child residing with the father8. In such cases the court can sometimes grant a joint residence order which giving the mother and father equal rights over
